Basic Sentence Structure

A basic sentence structure in grammar typically consists of two main components: a subject and a predicate. The subject is what or whom the sentence is about, while the predicate contains the verb and provides information about the subject’s action or state of being. This simple structure forms the foundation for constructing meaningful sentences in English and many other languages

In this segment, you will achieve 3 lesson objectives as follows:

  • You will understand the components of a sentence.
  • You will learn about the subject and predicate.
  • And identify nouns and verbs.

This is an introduction to Sentences using Subject + Predicate

    • Every sentence has two main parts: the subject and the predicate.
    • The subject tells us who or what the sentence is about.
    • The predicate tells us what the subject is doing or what is being said about the subject.

We have 3 main types of Sentences

1. Simple Sentences:

  • Contains one independent clause.
  • Example: The cat sleeps.
  • Further examples: She dances. They swim.

2. Compound Sentences:

  • Contains two or more independent clauses joined by a conjunction (e.g., and, but, or).
  • Example: The cat sleeps, and the dog barks.
  • Further examples: I wanted to go, but it was too late. She sings well, and she plays the guitar.

3. Complex Sentences:

  • Contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
  • Example: When the cat sleeps, the dog barks.
  • Further examples: Although it was raining, we went out. Because she was tired, she went to bed early.

Examples:

  • Simple: The cat sleeps.
  • Compound: The cat sleeps, and the dog barks.
  • Complex: When the cat sleeps, the dog barks.

Here is a quiz to test your understanding of day 1 lesson

  1. Identify the subject in the sentence: “The boy runs fast.”
  2. Identify the predicate in the sentence: “She sings beautifully.”
  3. Choose the correct sentence structure: “Although it was raining, we went out.”
