It's genuinely surprising how much of a Harvard or MIT course is available for free — full lecture notes, problem sets, and in many cases recorded lectures, published openly with no login required. The catch is that free access almost always means no certificate and no grading, so it's best treated as a way to actually learn the material, not to pad a resume.

MIT's OpenCourseWare is the most complete option for a fully self-directed route: entire courses, exactly as taught on campus, across nearly every subject MIT offers. It suits a student who's comfortable working through material independently and just wants access to genuinely excellent teaching materials.

edX and Coursera take a slightly different approach — the same calibre of instructor, but structured into a guided course format with a schedule, quizzes, and discussion forums, which suits students who do better with some external structure. Auditing is free on both; paying only unlocks a certificate, which matters mainly if you need it for a job application or credit transfer.

The realistic way to use any of these alongside a full course load is to pick one topic you're genuinely curious about or struggling with elsewhere, not to try to complete an entire course from start to finish in one sitting. A single well-taught lecture on a concept your own course glossed over is often worth more than hours of passive video-watching.
