Exams / WAEC

West African Examinations Council (WAEC)

WAEC administers the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) — the school-leaving exams taken across West African countries including Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Liberia. It is the main gateway to university admission in the region.

Format and subjects

Students sit a mix of core subjects (English Language, Mathematics, and a science or social science) plus elective subjects chosen based on their intended field of study — typically eight or nine subjects in total. Papers combine objective (multiple-choice), essay, and practical or oral components depending on the subject.

Grading

Results are graded A1 to F9 per subject, with A1–C6 generally considered credit passes. Most universities and polytechnics require at least five credits, including English and Mathematics, for admission — so those two subjects carry outsized weight in preparation.

How to prepare

Past questions are the single most effective preparation tool — WAEC reuses question styles and topic weightings year to year more than students expect. Build a subject-by-subject timeline working backwards from the exam period, prioritise English and Mathematics early since they gate everything else, and practise objective sections under timed conditions since speed is often the limiting factor there, not knowledge.
