Format and subjects

The UTME is entirely computer-based and covers four subjects: English Language (compulsory for every candidate) plus three others relevant to the course a student wants to study. Each subject has 40–50 objective questions, and the whole exam is completed in roughly two hours.

Grading

Scoring is out of 400 (100 per subject), and JAMB releases results almost immediately after the test window closes. Competitive courses at top universities often require scores well above the national average, so candidates targeting popular programmes should aim comfortably above the typical cutoff, not just the pass mark.

How to prepare

Because it's computer-based and heavily objective, speed and accuracy under a strict timer matter as much as raw knowledge — practising on a real CBT-style mock system before exam day removes a major source of avoidable mistakes. English Language is compulsory for everyone, so it deserves dedicated preparation even for students focused on science subjects.
