Format and subjects

Students typically specialise in three or four subjects, going considerably deeper than at IGCSE level. Many subjects are split into AS (first year) and A2 (second year) content, and assessment is almost entirely exam-based with long-form written papers that reward structured, well-evidenced answers.

Grading

Grades run from A* to E. Because students study fewer subjects than at IGCSE, each grade carries significant weight for university applications — competitive courses and universities often specify minimum grades in specific subjects relevant to the degree.

How to prepare

A-Level marking rewards depth of argument and precise use of subject terminology far more than GCSE-level work does — practising full past-paper essays and calculation-heavy questions under time pressure, then marking rigorously against the official scheme, is the clearest way to close the gap between a good answer and a top-mark answer.
