American College Testing

The ACT is the SAT's main alternative for US university admissions, distinguished by its dedicated Science section and an optional Writing test that some universities still request.

Format and subjects

The ACT covers English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science, with an optional Writing (essay) section. Unlike the SAT, it is not adaptive — every student sees the same questions — and the Science section tests data interpretation and scientific reasoning rather than recalled science content.

Grading

Each of the four main sections is scored 1–36, and the Composite score is the average of all four, rounded to the nearest whole number. Many students choose between the SAT and ACT based on which format suits them better — the ACT is more content-dense with a stricter time limit, which suits fast, confident readers.

How to prepare

Time pressure is the ACT's defining challenge — questions themselves are often more straightforward than the SAT's, but there are more of them per minute. Practising full timed sections specifically to build pacing instinct matters more here than on almost any other exam on this list, especially for the Reading and Science sections.
