Scholastic Assessment Test

The SAT, administered by the College Board, is a standardised test widely used in US university admissions and is now fully digital, adapting question difficulty as a student progresses through each section.

Format and subjects

The digital SAT covers two areas: Reading and Writing, and Math. It's an adaptive test — the second module in each section adjusts in difficulty based on performance in the first — and the whole exam takes roughly two hours, notably shorter than the older paper format.

Grading

Scores range from 400 to 1600, combining the Reading & Writing score and the Math score (each out of 800). Because the test is adaptive, consistent accuracy in the first module of each section matters more than trying to save time for later questions.

How to prepare

The College Board's own official practice questions and full-length digital practice tests are free and match the real adaptive format most closely — using them for timed practice is more valuable than generic third-party question banks. Reading speed and careful elimination of wrong answers matter as much as raw content knowledge, since most questions are designed to have a plausible-looking wrong answer.
