Exams / BECE

Basic Education Certificate Examination

BECE marks the end of junior high school in Ghana and determines placement into senior high schools — for most students, it's their first major national exam and a formative experience for the WASSCE that follows.

Format and subjects

Students sit around ten subjects, including compulsory core subjects (English, Mathematics, Integrated Science, and Social Studies) plus elective subjects. Papers combine objective (multiple-choice) and essay-style questions, similar in structure to WASSCE but at a foundational level.

Grading

Results are graded 1 (highest) to 9 (lowest) per subject, and the best six subjects — which must include the four core subjects — are aggregated into a placement score used by the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) to assign senior high school places.

How to prepare

Because CSSPS placement is competitive for popular schools, treating BECE with the same seriousness as WASSCE — rather than as a lower-stakes exam — genuinely changes outcomes. Consistent practice with past questions across all four core subjects builds both the content knowledge and the exam stamina that carries directly into WASSCE two years later.
