Format and subjects

Students sit a broad range of subjects — typically English, Kiswahili, Mathematics, sciences, humanities and an elective — with most subjects assessed through written papers, and sciences and some languages including a practical component.

Grading

KCSE uses a letter-grade scale from A (top) to E, with each subject grade converted into points that feed into an overall mean grade. University placement through KUCCPS is highly competitive and based heavily on this aggregate, particularly for high-demand courses like medicine and engineering.

How to prepare

Because the overall mean grade drives placement, a balanced strategy across all subjects usually beats maximising one or two at the expense of others. Past papers and KNEC's own released materials are the most exam-accurate practice resource available, and consistent practice in Mathematics and English pays off disproportionately since both feed into most course requirements.
