  • Marks out of 10 in a quick spelling quiz were 8, 8, 8, 6, 5, 10 and 10. What is the mode?

    • 5
    • 6
    • 10
    • 8

Answer: 8 — 8 appears 3 times — more than any other value — so the mode is 8. (10 appears only twice.)

  • A trotro carried 15, 11 and 10 passengers on 3 trips. What was the mean number of passengers per trip?

    Answer: 12 — Add them: 15 + 11 + 10 = 36. There are 3 values, so 36 ÷ 3 = 12.

  • Six runners finished the 100 m race in 15, 17, 18, 13, 14 and 12 seconds. What is the range of their times?

    • 6 s
    • 12 s
    • 18 s
    • 5 s

    Answer: 6 s — Range = highest − lowest: 18 − 12 = 6.
