Best Online Maths Resources — Free and Paid

From step-by-step solvers to full video courses — the maths resources worth using, and when each one actually helps.
Maths resources fall into two categories that get confused surprisingly often: tools that teach a concept, and tools that solve a specific problem. Both are useful, but only one of them actually builds understanding — the other is best used to check your own working, not replace it.
For learning a concept from scratch, structured video lessons that build up from fundamentals are hard to beat, and completely free. The value is in watching someone work through the reasoning, not just the final steps — pause and try the next step yourself before the video shows it.
Step-by-step problem solvers are genuinely useful, but only when used the right way: attempt the problem yourself first, then use the solver to check your working and understand exactly where you went wrong, not as a first resort. Used the wrong way, they quietly erode the skill they're supposed to support.
For anything involving advanced calculation — graphing a complex function, checking a multi-step algebraic simplification — a computational engine can save real time and catch arithmetic slips that are easy to miss by hand, which matters most once you're working on genuinely hard problems rather than practising basics.
The mix that works best for most students: free video lessons to learn each topic, past-paper questions to practise it, and a solver only as a final check — not the first thing you reach for when a problem looks hard.
